Never forget the intrinsic value that beauty holds
Nearly four years ago, when I was starting as a freshman at Berry, I wrote my first opinion piece for the Campus Carrier. It was about the importance of studying and appreciating the humanities, something I was just becoming passionate about. When I wrote that op-ed, I couldn’t truly grasp how much there still was…
We must continue to fight for freedom of speech
The First Amendment is often treated like a permanent fixture of American life, something immovable, untouchable, guaranteed. It isn’t. It survives because people insist on it.
Our View: Mentorship is the key to growth and success
Success is rarely something achieved alone. Behind the person who accomplishes something grand, there is usually a person who guides them, offering encouragement and constructive criticism along the way. Mentorship is where a more experienced or knowledgeable person provides advice, support and knowledge to someone going through similar motions in life that they once did.…
Letters to Kevin Kleine
Kevin Kleine has been part of my story for nearly 30 years, as my adviser, professor, Cabin Log adviser, Carrier adviser and friend. He also happened to be married to the amazing Jenny and trusted me enough to babysit his kids, which says a lot. At Berry, Kevin gave me a choice between two paths,…
Sometimes it’s better to be fun than pretentious
I don’t know if it’s just because I’m a communication major and I’ve spent a lot of my time in higher education delving into the different corners of the humanities, but I’ve encountered a lot of very strong, very cultured opinions when it comes to literature, film, music and art. These opinions are extremely well…
Student media needs your fresh voice, creative work
Berry College is a dynamic ecosystem of ideas, learning laboratories and innovation. Each day, dozens of stories unfold in our classrooms, residence halls, offices, labs, athletic fields and student centers. Many of these stories would go untold without strong college media outlets, like our student-run newspaper, magazines, podcasts and digital multi-media platform. Since it provides…
There are so many opportunities Berry has to offer
When I made the decision to come to Berry four fateful years ago, I told everyone that it was because I liked the opportunities it offered. At that point, I was mainly referring to LifeWorks, but throughout my time here, I’ve realized that the word applies to far more than that.
Our View: Decreasing office hours is bad for students
This academic year, Berry lowered minimum office hour requirement for professors from ten hours to six. While this decision may lighten professors’ already heavy workloads, its effect on students should also be acknowledged. Office hours are extremely beneficial for students. They allow for one-on-one clarification, deeper discussions on class topics and personalized feedback on assignments.
Community is important during stressful times
Despite being part of a tight campus community, even one as cohesive as Berry, it’s surprisingly common for students to struggle with isolation. When things get difficult, many of us retreat inward, telling ourselves we’ll handle it on our own. Part of that comes from the pressure to seem independent; it might also come from…
Our View: Losing print media is a loss for journalism
With the growth of digital media, physical newspapers have been struggling to adapt, especially with decreasing budgets. This is due to the quick publishing turnaround, the wider audience reach and the overall lower cost of online news. Although the growth of digital media is inevitable and beneficial, the decline of print media is harmful because…
Gift sustainably: nobody needs another gift set
In the spirit of spring cleaning, let’s talk about what is likely buried in the depths of your closet: piles of brand-new blankets, never-opened fluffy socks, random gadgets, a candle that has never been lit. These items were gifts bought with good intentions by people who care about you. The problem isn’t the intention, though, it’s…
Our View: HIV treatment should not be politicized
HIV treatment is not a luxury or a political tool. This treatment allows people that suffer from HIV to stay healthy, support their families and live longer, happier lives. Along with these benefits, it heavily lowers the risk of transmission, making treatment a public health priority. This is why any effort to take away or…
Show up, Berry: Why student presence matters beyond the classroom
Tristan Summers, staff contributor College is about much more than classes, assignments and exams. Some of the most meaningful parts of campus life happen outside the classroom, at sporting events, performances, club meetings and other student activities. These events give students the chance to support one another, build school spirit and feel like they are…
Bryan Johnson’s quest for humanity is problematic
Bryan Johnson is a multimillionaire who gained his net worth of $300 million by founding “Braintree,” a company which became what we now know as Venmo and PayPal. But what Johnson is most famous for is “Blueprint.” Blueprint is Johnson’s formula of exercise, vitamins and medical procedures meant to reverse his age.
Our View: You should spend less time on your phone
Taking a look around the dining hall, the library or even during everyday walks to class, everyone is staring down at their phone. As college students, we have a million tasks plaguing our brains, so we often spend the little free time we such as free our breaks to eat or our walks to the next…
Choosing a college to attend shouldn’t be stressful
As a junior and senior in high school, I was one of many students stressed about college decisions. I was constantly comparing my “dream” schools to back-up schools, and at the time, it felt like the decision I made about where I wanted to go was going to dramatically affect my entire life. Everyone around…
Our View: Berry must end their Aramark contract
What would you do if you were told that you were inadvertently giving money to an organization that you do not support? Companies often do business with other organizations, and it can be difficult to keep up with what they fund. Nonetheless, it is extremely important to pay attention to what you are supporting so…
Not being politically active is a sign of privilege
I bet some people have already turned the page, extremely upset at being called out. If you find yourself in a situation where people around you are distraught by a certain political event, and you don’t feel the same way, you are most likely privileged for having your needs met by the status quo.
Our View: The arts deserve to have more funding
Arts and humanities have been the backbone of cultural development throughout history. They preserve our past and help us better our future. Despite this, these subjects are often treated as expendable in educational systems today. Modern-day education often focuses on STEM pathways, especially when it comes to allocating finances. When budgets shrink, it is the…
Make sure to respect everyone’s preferred name
How likely is it that you have a name or nickname that differs from the one you were given at birth? There is a high possibility that you do, as nicknames have been prevalent among various people and societies since humanity’s inception.
